NCIG wins NSW Mining’s Safety Excellence Award

August 05, 2024

NCIG is thrilled to have won the prestigious Safety Excellence Award at the annual NSW Mining HSEC conference. This accolade celebrates our innovative Safety Culture Score (SCS), a pioneering tool designed to proactively measure and enhance safety performance.

We faced the challenge of effectively measuring safety performance using traditional lag indicators, which are less effective for organisations with low injury records. In response, we developed the SCS, which integrates lead safety indicators across four key dimensions: Environment, Practices, People, and Leadership. This holistic approach has not only improved transparency and accountability but also facilitated informed decision-making and strategic alignment.

“Through the development of our Safety Culture Score, NCIG has shifted the focus from reactive to proactive safety measures, leading to significant improvements and setting a new benchmark for safety performance reporting in the industry,” said Manager People and Culture, Lauren Ross.

The implementation of the SCS has lead to remarkable results. Over the FY21-23 period, we observed a 10% increase in our SCS, correlating with a 34% reduction in total incidents and a 50% decrease in recorded injuries. These metrics underscore our commitment to fostering a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement.

The SCS framework, influenced by Sentis’ Safety Culture Model, emphasises the intersection of multiple dimensions of safety culture. This model has resonated with our workforce, ensuring that the SCS is not only theoretically sound but also practically applicable. By incorporating feedback from internal stakeholders, we have tailored the SCS to reflect our organisational culture and goals, ensuring broad engagement and ownership.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team’s innovative thinking and dedication in developing the Safety Culture Score and actively embedding it into our operations. Their efforts have enhanced our collaborative culture when it comes to safety reporting and outcomes,” continued Mrs Ross

Our success with the SCS highlights its potential for transferability beyond the mining industry. By leveraging theory-backed metrics and industry best practices, the SCS offers a standardised approach that can be adopted by various organisations seeking to enhance their safety performance. We are excited to share this innovative tool with others and invite interested parties to contact us for more information.

Congratulations to our Health and Safety team for their outstanding work and this well-deserved recognition. This award is a testament to NCIG’s unwavering commitment to safety excellence and our proactive, engaged culture of safety.
