Fleet electrification project
At Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG), we are steadfast in our commitment to achieving Net Zero Operational emissions by 2030. A significant element in this journey is the electrification of our operational vehicle fleet, which will effectively reduce the Scope 1 emissions associated with our operations.
Following the successful trial of an electric SUV in FY22, NCIG established a project team to help evaluate the electric vehicle (EV) market and charging technology to identify suitable options for replacing NCIG’s diesel-powered fleet. The team also helped with the development of our vehicle electrification transition plan.
Based on the recommendations from the project team, NCIG has purchased an additional seven electric SUV’s, taking our total EV fleet to eight. This marks a significant step forward in our phased transition, with the ultimate goal of achieving a fully electrified operational vehicle fleet by 2030.
Supporting infrastructure for sustainable operations
To power our growing EV fleet, NCIG has installed three electric vehicle fast chargers onsite, ensuring efficient and reliable charging for electric vehicles. This infrastructure investment reflects our proactive approach to supporting sustainable operations and provides for our future EV charging needs.
Recognising the broader potential for EV adoption, NCIG has also extended charging capabilities to employees and their private vehicles, with one of the fast chargers installed in our employee carpark. Personal EVs can access the electric vehicle chargers at a highly competitive discounted rate, making sustainable travel more accessible and reducing the Scope 3 emissions associated with our site operations.
Empowering employees to embrace EVs
NCIG’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond operational goals to include our people. Our salary-sacrificed novated leasing program provides employees with a cost-effective option to transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to EVs. By combining financial incentives with accessible infrastructure, we aim to empower our team to embrace a cleaner, greener future.
Driving sustainability through innovation
NCIG’s fleet electrification project is an element of our broader sustainability strategy. By transitioning to EVs and supporting our employees in adopting sustainable practices, we are taking meaningful steps to reduce emissions and drive innovation, further strengthening NCIG’s role as an industry leader in environmental responsibility.
