NCIG excited to welcome the community to Kooragang Island once again

May 15, 2023

NCIG was proud to welcome over 400 guests to the recent Family and Community Open Day. The Open Day was the first opportunity for community members to view the site post-COVID and the event was a fantastic occasion.

Guests were given the opportunity to take a site tour. For many this was the first time getting a chance to see the machinery they drive by, up and close. And for some, the sheer size of the operation was something to be marveled at.

One Open Day attendee from Shortland said “when I first drove along Commorant Rd and saw the machinery I was so intrigued. To get a chance to see the Stacker Reclaimers and learn about the journey of the coal from the dump station all the way to the Shiploader was such a unique experience. Thanks, NCIG for opening the gates to us today!”

Hosted by current staff members, the site tours were a guided bus-tour around the Kooragang Island site where guests were given the opportunity to enjoy two stops; one at the Wharf facility where they got to witness our Shiploader in action, and one at the Stacker Reclaimer where guests could see the machine at close range.

There was also the opportunity to have some fun, with children of all ages enjoying entertainment provided by local vendors. A small treat for guests was also the opportunity to take a piece of coal home with them! For some this was their first-time touching coal, giving them a real sense of what is at the core of operations here at NCIG.

Thank you to all who took time out of their busy schedules to attend our Family and Community Open Day. To see all the photos taken from the day, please visit our Facebook page, https://bit.ly/3BpJscJ
